This diminutive gateway is a curious combination of medieval and classical motifs typical of architecture in the second half of the sixteenth century in England.
The gate opens onto Senate House Passage and graduating students pass through it on their way to graduate in the Senate House opposite — the shortest procession in Cambridge! You can find my charcoal drawing of Senate House Passage here
