Blackwell, set high above Windermere, is one of Baillie Scott’s masterpieces, a symphony on a domestic scale. This pencil drawing takes as its subject the staircase up to the second floor which appears to grow out of the panelling of the walls. Its generosity and theatrical landing invite one to climb.
